North Dakota Schools ponder drug tests

North Dakota students may face random testing as methamphetamine problem grows. Area schools are considering policies to conduct random drug tests on students. At the Devils Lake Public School District, a draft of such a policy is expected to be completed today and soon will be sent to parents for review. North Dakota State's Attorney Barbara Whelan is preparing a policy for the consideration of all seven school districts in Pembina County.
Both actions were triggered by the explosion of methamphetamine in North Dakota in recent years. The increase in meth lab busts and the number of children placed in social services because of meth-related incidents also prompted the Legislature to pass stricter laws in dealing with drug crimes.
